Government jobs at age 17 to 22
At 17, almost every civil recruitment in India is still closed to you. Railway Group D posts and the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams, including Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) and General Duty (GD) Constable, set the minimum age at 18. The regular route that opens earlier is the Agnipath scheme, which recruits Agniveers into the Army, Navy and Air Force from 17 and a half. That is why most listings in this age band are defence intakes, and why a search for a 17 age govt job usually ends at an Agniveer notification.
Agniveer intakes open at 17.5
An Agniveer serves a four-year engagement, and up to a quarter of each batch can be kept on as regular soldiers, sailors or airmen afterwards. This site listed the Indian Army’s Agniveer notification of February 2026 with an age window of 17.5 to 22 years and qualifications from 8th pass to graduate, depending on the post. Some other summaries of the same notice put the upper limit at 21, so take the ceiling for your post from the notice itself.
Defence notices usually write the age rule as two dates of birth, not two ages. Summaries of the Indian Air Force’s Agniveervayu Intake 01/2027 notice gave the window as 1 January 2006 to 1 July 2009, both dates included. On that window, someone born on 2 July 2009 misses the intake by one day. At least one summary says the age limit for that intake was extended later, so use the two dates in the current version of the notice. Your age on the day you fill the form does not decide it.
What the 22 ceiling means
On a civil post, the upper limit in the notification is the General-category figure. OBC (Other Backward Classes), SC/ST (Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe) and PwD (persons with disabilities) candidates get extra years on top of it under the recruiter’s relaxation rules. Agniveer notifications have used one age window for every category, with no category relaxation. A 23-year-old SC candidate who would qualify for a railway post through relaxation should not expect the same on an Agniveer intake. Read the relaxation paragraph of each notification before you count on extra years.
