Age Limit 55 - 70

Posts open to applicants aged 55 to 70
Most central government employees retire at 60. So a notice that still accepts applicants at 62, 65 or 70 is usually hiring retired people, as re-employed office staff or as contract consultants and advisers. Regular recruitment through a written exam closes to General-category candidates decades earlier.
What a retired-officer post asks for
The eligibility line usually names where you retired from and at what level. A notice asking for retirement at Pay Level 10 or above means level 10 of the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix. Most also want years in one field, such as accounts, vigilance or court cases. Some notices ask for a copy of your Pension Payment Order (PPO), since it proves both the retirement and the last post held. Posts for retired defence personnel ask for the discharge book instead. Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) polyclinics are one employer that hires contract staff in this age range.
Some consultant and expert posts drop the government-service condition, so a 58-year-old from a private hospital or firm can apply on experience alone.
What the contract usually says
Many notices set a one-year term, renewable on performance, with a clause that the engagement gives no claim to a regular post. Some also end the contract when you reach the upper age limit, even mid-term. A 69-year-old on a post capped at 70 may get only a few months. Some notices pay a fixed monthly fee; others pay your last pay drawn minus your basic pension. Contract notices for retired staff do not always give the category relaxation that regular recruitment does, so check the age paragraph.
FAQ
I retired from a state government. Can I apply to a central consultant post?
Only if the eligibility line includes you. A post open only to retired Central Government officers leaves you out. One open to retired officers of Central or State Government or PSUs (public sector undertakings) lets you in.
Does my pension stop if I take one of these contract posts?
Usually not. Where pay is last pay drawn minus pension, the deduction assumes you keep drawing the pension, so the two together come to roughly your last pay.
What the 55-70 range can mean
One notice can cap a support post at 55 and a specialist post at 70. Check the age printed against your post. Posts with lower ceilings are listed on other age-limit pages, such as age limit 32-55. How the cut-off date fixes your age is explained in our age limit guide.
