Position Data Engineer

Government data engineer jobs rarely use “Data Engineer” as a cadre name. The title turns up mostly in specialist and project notices, where an organisation hires someone to build and run its data pipelines. Permanent posts doing the same work are often advertised as IT Officer, Scientist-B or Assistant Manager (IT), so search those titles too. More IT and data openings are under Engineering jobs and Banking jobs.
Who hires data engineers in the government sector
The National Informatics Centre (NIC), the Digital India Corporation and state e-governance societies employ them to run the databases behind citizen services. Public sector banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) hire for their data and analytics units. Research bodies such as C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) and CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) laboratories hire project staff for the life of a funded project.
Contract or regular post
Notices that use the words “data engineer” are often for contract or fixed-term posts. The notice states the tenure and any extension. NABARD’s 2026 notice for data analytics specialists offered two years, extendable up to five. A contract post usually pays a consolidated monthly amount rather than a level in the pay matrix, so there is no dearness allowance (DA) and no pension.
FAQ
Is there a written exam for contract data engineer posts?
Often not. Contract specialists are mostly shortlisted on qualification and experience, then interviewed. Regular IT posts in banks and public sector undertakings normally go through a written exam. The notice’s selection-process section says which applies.
Does private-sector data engineering experience count?
Usually yes. Some notices count only experience with a named kind of employer, such as banks or financial institutions.
Qualifications, skills and the experience cut-off
Expect a B.E. or B.Tech in computer science, IT or electronics, an MCA, or an M.Sc. in computer science or statistics. Specialist notices add a minimum number of years of post-qualification experience. The skills list usually names SQL, Python and ETL (extract, transform, load) tools, and Spark or cloud experience is often marked desirable.
Only the “essential” column decides whether you can apply; the “desirable” one may be used to shortlist. Find the cut-off date for experience, because the notice counts experience up to that date and not up to the day you apply.
