Government jobs under 18 are few, and almost none of them are civil posts. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC), the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and the public sector banks all set their minimum at 18 or higher. Below 18, the routes that stay open lead into the armed forces, as an Agniveer or an officer cadet, or into an apprenticeship, which is paid training and not a permanent job.
This guide goes through each route with the age rule from a recent notice on the recruiter’s own website, or from the law where there is no notice. How cut-off dates and category relaxation work in general is in our government jobs age limit guide, so it is not repeated here.
Why the civil exams start at 18 or later
Every civil notice prints a lower age, an upper age and the date both are measured on. The recent ones all put the floor at 18 or above:
- SSC Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) 2025 set 18 to 25, reckoned on 1 August 2025, so the latest birth date it accepted was 1 August 2007.
- RRB Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) undergraduate posts, CEN 06/2024, set 18 to 33 as on 1 January 2025.
- RRB Level 1 posts (the old Group D), CEN 08/2024, set 18 to 36, a range that included a one-time three-year Covid relaxation.
- Clerk posts in public sector banks, filled through the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), start two years later. CRP Clerks XIV in 2024 set 20 to 28.
So a search for “18 se kam age ki vacancy” will not find an SSC, railway board or bank exam that takes a 16-year-old. It can find the routes below.
A 17-year-old does have one opening on civil notices. Age is measured on the cut-off date the notice prints, not on the day you apply, so a notice whose cut-off date falls on or after your 18th birthday is open to you while you are still 17. Our age 17 to 22 page covers that case.

| Agniveer in the Army, Navy or Air Force | 17.5 | Varies by post; Class 10 with 45% for Army Agniveer General Duty | A four-year engagement |
The two apprenticeships take the youngest candidates, and they are the two that are not jobs. The rest of this guide starts with Agniveer at 17.5 and works down to the apprenticeship at 14.
Agniveer: entry at 17.5 years
“17.5” in a search like “17.5 age govt job” means 17 years and 6 months. That is the minimum age for an Agniveer in all three services under the Agnipath scheme. The upper limit has moved, and each service publishes its own.
The Army’s Agniveer eligibility page lists Agniveer General Duty at 17.5 to 21, with Class 10 passed at 45% aggregate and 33% in each subject. For the Agniveer 2027 cycle, whose registration ran from 13 February to 1 April 2026, the Army raised the upper limit to 22 (Nagaland government press note).
The Air Force’s Central Airmen Selection Board gives the minimum as 17.5 years as on the date of enrolment, with 21 as the usual maximum. The Air Force calls its Agniveers Agniveervayu, and for Agniveervayu Intake 01/2027 it raised the maximum to 22 and reopened registration from 3 to 10 March 2026.
The Navy’s Agniveer SSR page puts the age at 17.5 to 21 on the day of enrolment.
The words “date of enrolment” matter more to an under-18 candidate than the upper limit does. The Navy and Air Force measure your age on the day you join, not on the day you fill the form, so you can still be under 17.5 when you apply. Intake notices print this as a window of birth dates, so take the window from the notice for your intake and check your date of birth against it. What happens after the four years is on our age 17 to 22 page.
NDA and the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme: officer entries from about 16.5
The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination, which the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds twice a year, takes the youngest candidates of any defence entry on this list.
The NDA (II) 2026 notice was open to unmarried male and female candidates born not earlier than 1 January 2008 and not later than 1 January 2011. The written exam was on 13 September 2026, for the 158th course. On that day the youngest eligible candidate was 15 years, 8 months and 12 days old. NDA (I) 2026 used 1 July 2007 to 1 July 2010, so the window moved forward six months between the two exams of the year.
You can apply while you are still in Class 12. The Army wing takes Class 12 in any stream. The Air Force and Naval wings need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The notice also makes you undertake not to marry until your training is complete.
The Army’s 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme takes candidates aged 16.5 to 19.5 who have 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) in Class 12 and have taken the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main. Candidates must be unmarried, and the Army lists 90 vacancies per course, with two courses a year. Class 12 has to be passed before you apply, so the 16.5 floor helps only someone who finished school young. Each course’s detailed notice on joinindianarmy.nic.in fixes the date your age is measured on.
Railway Act Apprentice: from 15, with Class 10 and ITI
Each railway zone’s Railway Recruitment Cell takes Act Apprentices into its workshops and units, usually once a year. West Central Railway’s notice 01/2025, dated 20 August 2025, offered 2,865 training slots. Candidates had to have completed 15 years and not completed 24 on 20 August 2025, and applications ran from 30 August to 29 September 2025. Other zones’ 2025 notices kept the same 15 and 24 but measured age on their own dates: Central Railway on 12 August 2025, North Western Railway on 2 November 2025.
RRC notices ask for Class 10 with at least 50% aggregate and an ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate in the trade. There is no written exam. The merit list averages your Class 10 percentage and your ITI percentage with equal weight, so 80% and 90% give you 85. When two candidates tie on marks, the notices prefer the older one. A 15-year-old loses that tie to a 20-year-old with the same score.
The training ends with the National Apprenticeship Certificate, explained on our NAC page. Openings that ask for the ITI certificate itself are under ITI jobs.
The apprenticeship is not a railway job, but it can lead to one. Indian Railways fills 20% of direct-recruitment vacancies in Level 1 by giving preference to course-completed Act Apprentices who trained in railway establishments (Press Information Bureau (PIB) release). Those candidates still have to reach the minimum qualifying marks and the medical standard (PIB). Level 1 recruitment starts at 18, so the apprenticeship is training you can finish before you are old enough to apply.
Apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act: 14, or 18 in hazardous trades
Outside the railways, the floor comes from the law itself. Section 3 of the Apprentices Act, 1961 says a person must be at least 14 to train as an apprentice in a designated trade, and at least 18 for designated trades related to hazardous industries. The railway notices set their own floor a year higher, at 15.
Three other sections of the Act are worth reading before a 14 to 17-year-old signs up:
- Section 4: if the apprentice is a minor, the guardian enters into the contract of apprenticeship with the employer.
- Section 18: an apprentice is a trainee and not a worker, and labour laws do not apply to the apprentice.
- Section 22: each employer sets its own policy on recruiting apprentices who finish training. It is bound to offer a job only if the contract says the apprentice will serve the employer after training.
Employers post apprenticeship openings on the national portal, apprenticeshipindia.gov.in. The Ministry of Skill Development’s guidelines for the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme say a candidate registers there with Aadhaar and needs at least a Class 5 pass and the same 14 or 18 minimum age. Applying, accepting an offer and signing the contract all happen online. The stipend amount is set in the notice or the contract, so read it there before you accept.
Quick answers on government jobs under 18
Can a 17-year-old get a government job in India?
Not a civil post through SSC, the railway boards or IBPS, which start at 18 or 20. At 17 you can apply for NDA if your date of birth falls in the notice’s window, for TES once you have passed Class 12 with PCM and taken JEE Main, and for a railway or other apprenticeship. Agniveer opens at 17 years and 6 months.
Which government job can I get at 17.5?
Agniveer in the Army, Navy or Air Force. The Navy and Air Force measure the 17.5 on the date of enrolment, and each intake notice prints a birth-date window you must fall inside.
Is a railway Act Apprentice a government job?
No. It is training under the Apprentices Act, 1961, with a stipend, and the Act says an apprentice is a trainee, not a worker. Course-completed railway apprentices do get preference for 20% of railway Level 1 vacancies once they are old enough to apply.
Is there a bank job for someone under 18?
No. IBPS clerk recruitment starts at 20; CRP Clerks XIV in 2024 set 20 to 28.
If you are 15, 16 or 17 today
At 15 or 16, and not yet in Class 12, an apprenticeship is the only route on this list that is open to you. The railway one also needs Class 10 and an ITI certificate already in hand.
Once you are in Class 12, NDA is open if your date of birth falls inside the window. UPSC publishes the notice twice a year on upsc.gov.in.
From 17 years and 6 months, Agniveer is open in all three services. The Army registers candidates on joinindianarmy.nic.in, the Air Force on agnipathvayu.cdac.in and the Navy on joinindiannavy.gov.in, and each intake’s birth-date window is in its notice.
At 18 the civil exams open. Posts with an 18 to 33 age limit are listed on our age 18 to 33 page.
